Shellbark Hickory Carya laciniosa, also called Big Shellbark Hickory and Kingnut Hickory. While the Shellbark tastes as good as shagbark, it is larger in size. Too bad it is rather a rare tree—in New York it is on the threatened plant list and in Maryland the endangered list. We have found it to be a really reliable heavy bearer—even better than the black walnut. It also tastes as good, or even better than the pecan, which is just another type of hickory. Actually, it would be more accurate to call the pecan the Pecan Hickory.
